What this tool handles

This utilities tool focuses on English words, Letter combinations, Word puzzles.

  • Find words made from supplied letters
  • Include full-length and shorter results
  • Filter by word length
  • Open definitions for matching words

Which letters give you the most words

Not all letters pull their weight. The letters that appear in the most English words are, in order, E, A, R, I, O, T, N and S — and a set drawn mostly from those will produce far more results than one loaded with J, Q, X and Z. This is the tension at the heart of tile games: the letters worth the most points are the ones that fit into the fewest words.

A practical rule when you get to choose is to keep roughly three vowels to four consonants. Too few vowels and nothing connects; too many and you cannot build length.

Reading a long result list

When your letters produce hundreds of words, start at the length you actually need rather than the top. The results are grouped by length precisely so you can jump to the relevant block, and within each block the highest-scoring word comes first.

Frequently asked questions

What words can I make with these letters?

Type the letters into the box above and the complete list appears immediately, sorted from the longest word down. Each result shows its point value, and clicking it opens the definition so you can confirm it is a word you want to use.

How many words can you make with a set of letters?

It depends heavily on the letters. A vowel-rich seven-letter set such as AEIRSTL yields several hundred words, while a consonant-heavy set of the same size may yield only a few dozen. The counter above the results tells you the exact total for your letters.

Do I have to use every letter?

No. This tool shows every word that can be built from any subset of your letters. If you need words that use every letter exactly once, use the anagram solver instead.

Can I find words with these letters in a specific order?

Yes. Use the pattern filter and type a question mark for each unknown position, for example c??se, to match words whose letters sit in particular places.
