Frequently asked questions
Is this a word?
Type it into the box above. If it appears in the dictionary of over 270,000 English words, you will see a confirmation along with its meaning and point value. If not, you will see a clear invalid result so you can double-check the spelling.
Where do the definitions come from?
Definitions, parts of speech and frequency data come from Princeton University’s WordNet, a large lexical database of English. Words that are valid for play but have no WordNet entry are still shown as valid, just without a definition.
Is a word valid in Scrabble just because it is in this dictionary?
Not necessarily. Tournament play uses official regional word lists, which differ from a general English dictionary in both directions. For casual games this list is a reasonable arbiter; for sanctioned play, defer to the official list.
