What a word unscrambler actually does
A scrambled word is just a set of letters with the order thrown away. What matters is not the sequence you typed but the multiset of letters it contains — and every word that uses the same letters shares that fingerprint. Sorting the letters of listen alphabetically gives eilnst, and so does sorting silent, enlist and tinsel. Group the whole dictionary by that fingerprint once, and unscrambling stops being a search problem and becomes a single lookup.
That is exactly how this site works. Every one of the 270,000 words is filed under its sorted-letter key when the site is built. When you type seven letters, the tool generates the fingerprints of every subset of those letters and looks each one up directly. There is no guessing and no permutation explosion, which is why results appear as fast as you can type — and why it stays instant even with blank tiles in the mix.
Unscrambling for each game
Different games reward different things, so the right answer depends on what you are playing:
- Scrabble — the longest word is often not the best word. Use the Scrabble word finder, which sorts by official tile values so a short, heavy word like quiz outranks a long, cheap one.
- Words With Friends — WWF assigns its own values, so the same rack ranks differently. The WWF word finder uses the real table.
- Wordle — you are not unscrambling so much as eliminating. The Wordle solver takes your green, yellow and grey clues and returns only the five-letter words still standing.
- Anagram puzzles — these demand every letter, used once. The anagram solver enforces that strictly rather than returning shorter partial words.
- Crosswords — here you know positions, not letters. The crossword solver matches patterns like c??s?word against the dictionary.
Getting better at unscrambling without a tool
The tool gives you the answer; these habits help you find it yourself next time.
- Look for common endings first. Pulling -ing, -ed, -er, -tion or -ly off the end shrinks the puzzle immediately.
- Separate vowels from consonants. Most English words alternate between them, and seeing the vowels on their own suggests where they belong.
- Hunt for familiar clusters. TH, CH, SH, STR and QU almost always travel together.
- Build up from short words. Find every three-letter word first, then look for a spare letter that extends one of them.
- Rewrite the letters in a circle. A straight line tricks your brain into reading the scrambled order as if it means something.
How this site is built
The dictionary is assembled from open English lexicons and enriched with definitions, parts of speech and corpus frequency data from Princeton University’s WordNet. Frequency matters: it is what keeps listen above silen in the results, so the words you actually recognise come first.
Everything runs in your browser. The dictionary index is split into small chunks that load only when a word of that length is needed, so nothing you type is ever sent to a server. That keeps the tool fast, private, and fully functional even on a slow connection once the first search is done.
Frequently asked questions
What is a word unscrambler?
A word unscrambler is a tool that takes a group of jumbled letters and returns every valid English word those letters can spell. You type the letters in any order, and the unscrambler checks them against a dictionary of more than 270,000 words, then lists every match sorted by length and point value.
How do I unscramble words?
Type your scrambled letters into the search box and the results appear instantly. You can narrow them by word length, starting letter, ending letter or a letter the word must contain. Use a question mark for a blank or wildcard tile.
Is this word unscrambler free?
Yes. Every tool on the site is completely free, with no account, no sign-up and no limit on the number of words you can unscramble.
How many letters can I unscramble at once?
Up to 15 letters, which covers the longest word that fits on a standard Scrabble board. You can also include up to three blank tiles by typing a question mark for each one.
Can I use a word unscrambler for Scrabble and Words With Friends?
Yes. The Scrabble word finder ranks results using official Scrabble tile values, and the Words With Friends finder uses the different WWF tile values, so the highest-scoring play at the top of each list is correct for the game you are actually playing.
Does the unscrambler work for Wordle?
Yes. The Wordle solver filters to five-letter words and lets you enter the letters you have confirmed, the letters that are in the word but misplaced, and the letters you have ruled out, so you get a shortlist of remaining candidates.
What do the small numbers next to each word mean?
That is the point value of the word. On Scrabble pages it is the Scrabble score, and on Words With Friends pages it is the WWF score, because the two games assign different values to the same tiles.
Where do the words come from?
The word list is built from open English lexicons, and the definitions come from Princeton University’s WordNet. Every result links to a word page with its meaning, part of speech, score and anagrams.
