Uses every letter exactly once and excludes the original spelling.

Enter at least two letters to see every word you can make.

Quick answer

How does the Anagram Solver work?

An anagram solver finds words that use every one of your letters exactly once. Unlike a general unscrambler, it will not return shorter words that use only part of your input, so the results are true anagrams.

Worked example

Input: LISTEN

Result: ENLIST, INLETS, SILENT, TINSEL

Only exact six-letter rearrangements are returned; shorter words are deliberately excluded.

What this tool handles

This utilities tool focuses on English words, Letter combinations, Word puzzles.

  • Find exact full-length anagrams
  • Use every supplied letter exactly once
  • Handle repeated letters
  • Exclude shorter subwords

How anagrams are found

Every word has a fingerprint: its letters sorted into alphabetical order. STOP, TOPS, POTS, OPTS and SPOT all reduce to the fingerprint OPST. Group the dictionary by that fingerprint and the anagrams of any word are simply the other members of its group — no rearranging required.

This is why the solver is instant even for long inputs. It never generates permutations; it computes one fingerprint and reads off the answer.

Anagrams in puzzles

Cryptic crossword clues signal anagrams with words suggesting disorder — broken, confused, mixed, wild, drunk — placed next to the letters to rearrange. Spotting the indicator is usually harder than solving the anagram itself. Once you have isolated the fodder letters and the definition, this tool closes the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging all the letters of another, using each letter exactly once. LISTEN and SILENT are anagrams; so are ENLIST, TINSEL and INLETS, which all share the letters E, I, L, N, S and T.

How is an anagram solver different from a word unscrambler?

An unscrambler returns every word buildable from any part of your letters, including short ones. An anagram solver only returns words that use all of them. If you enter six letters, an anagram solver returns six-letter words and nothing shorter.

Why does my word have no anagrams?

Most letter combinations map to exactly one word, or none. Anagram-rich letter sets are the exception, and they tend to be built from the most common letters. If your word returns nothing, no other English word shares its exact letters.

What word has the most anagrams?

Short, vowel-and-common-consonant sets do best. The letters of words like STOP, ARTS and LEAST each rearrange into several other valid words. Search any word on the site and its word page lists every anagram it has.
