What this tool handles

This utilities tool focuses on English words, Letter combinations, Word puzzles.

When a word unscrambler earns its keep

The obvious use is a stuck moment in a game, but the tool is just as useful the other way round: as a way to see the full space of what your letters could have been. Players who check their rack after a turn learn far faster than players who only check when they are stuck, because the gap between what you found and what was there is where the improvement lives.

Teachers use it to build spelling exercises with a known answer key. Puzzle setters use it to confirm that a scramble has exactly one clean solution. Crossword solvers use it to test whether a set of leftover letters can form the answer they suspect.

Reading the results

Results are grouped by word length, longest first, because in most games length correlates with value. Inside each group, words are ordered by score. The small number beside each word is its point value: Scrabble values by default, and Words With Friends values on the WWF pages, since the two games score the same tiles differently.

Every word links to its own page with a definition, part of speech, both scores and a full anagram list, so you can confirm a word is real before you commit to playing it.

Frequently asked questions

How does a word unscrambler work?

It sorts the letters of every dictionary word alphabetically to create a fingerprint, then does the same to your letters and every subset of them. Any word whose fingerprint matches is a valid answer. This turns unscrambling into a direct lookup instead of testing every possible arrangement, which is why results appear instantly.

What is the best word unscrambler?

The best unscrambler is the one with the largest dictionary, the fastest results and useful filters. This tool covers 270,000+ words, returns results as you type, supports blank tiles, and lets you filter by length, prefix, suffix and pattern, with a definition and score attached to every word.

Can it unscramble long words?

Yes, up to 15 letters, which is the longest word that fits across a standard Scrabble board. Longer inputs are truncated to the first 15 letters.

Why do some results look like words I have never seen?

The dictionary includes valid but uncommon English words, including inflected forms and archaic spellings. Results are ranked by how familiar a word is, using corpus frequency data, so the words you recognise appear first. Click any word to read its definition.

Does the unscrambler store what I type?

No. The entire dictionary and search engine run inside your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server.
