Guess for information, not for the win

The most common mistake in Wordle is spending guess three on a word that could be right but tests almost nothing new. Early in the puzzle, the goal is elimination. A guess that cannot possibly be the answer but rules out five untested letters is often worth more than a plausible guess that rules out one.

Once you are down to a handful of candidates, switch modes: now you want the guess that splits the remaining set most evenly, so that whatever comes back leaves you with one answer rather than three.

Using it as a Wordle unscrambler

Sometimes you have found all five letters and only the order is missing. Enter each one as a yellow letter, and add any green letters in their fixed squares. The solver then works as a Wordle unscrambler: it lists every real five-letter word that uses exactly those letters, so you can spot the answer without spending a guess on an arrangement that is not a word.

The same approach helps with four known letters. Leave the fifth square open and the results show every word that could complete the set, which usually narrows the last letter to two or three options.

The trap of repeated letters

Words with doubled letters are where streaks die. If you have tested five distinct letters and nothing fits, the answer very likely repeats one. The solver handles repeats correctly, so entering what you know will surface options like ABBEY or FLUFF that are easy to overlook by eye.
