Why letter frequency matters
English letters are wildly uneven in how much work they do. The gap between the most and least productive letter here is more than a hundredfold, and that imbalance is the reason tile games score the way they do: the rarer a letter, the more it is worth, and the harder it is to play.
The practical consequence is that a rack full of high-value tiles is usually a bad rack. Points on the tile are only realised if you can place it, and the letters that place most easily are the ones worth a single point.
